Mega Man Xtreme 2 (released in 2001) is the second and final Mega Man X series title for the Nintendo Game Boy Color. Set chronologically between Mega Man X3 and Mega Man X4, it follows Maverick Hunters X and Zero as they investigate the "Erasure" phenomenon on Laguz Island.
Key Gameplay Features
- Dual Playable Characters: You can play through separate missions for both Mega Man X and Zero. While they share the same story, they face different sets of Mavericks (four each) and have unique endings.
- DNA Soul System: Fallen enemies leave behind "DNA Souls" which you can collect and use as currency between levels to build new power-up parts and weapons.
- Character Switching: Once both X and Zero's missions are completed, you can unlock an Extreme Mode that allows you to switch between the two heroes mid-stage.
- Refined Mechanics: Unlike its predecessor, this is a dedicated Game Boy Color title that cannot be played on original Game Boy hardware. It features improved cutscenes and tighter, more responsive platforming controls.
Story Overview
Reploids around the world are becoming lifeless shells as their data is being erased. X and Zero discover that a duo of "Soul Erasers"—Berkana and Gareth—are stealing these DNA Souls to resurrect deceased Mavericks and build an undead army. Assisted by a young Iris, the duo must stop the Soul Erasers and uncover the mastermind behind the plot.
Game Modes
- Normal Mode: Choose either X or Zero for their specific missions.
- Extra Mode: Unlocked after beating the game; lets you play the other character's missions with their respective weapons already acquired.
- Extreme Mode: Allows character switching and features all eight Mavericks.
- Boss Attack Mode: A survival mode focused purely on boss battles.
