Donkey Kong 64 is a 3D action-adventure platformer released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. Developed by Rare, it was the first game in the franchise to feature 3D gameplay and is widely known as a "collect-a-thon" due to its massive number of items to find. 

Core Gameplay

• Playable Characters: You can play as five different Kongs, each with unique abilities, weapons, and instruments:
• Donkey Kong: Uses a Coconut Shooter and Bongos; can pull levers and become invincible.
• Diddy Kong: Uses Peanut Popguns and a Guitar; features a jetpack for flight.
• Lanky Kong: Uses a Grape Pipe and Trombone; has long reach and can float like a balloon.
• Tiny Kong: Uses a Feather Bow and Saxophone; can shrink herself and hover with her ponytails.
• Chunky Kong: Uses a Pineapple Launcher and Triangle; possesses immense strength and can grow to giant size.
• The Collect-a-thon: The game features over 200 Golden Bananas and thousands of other items (colored bananas, coins, blueprints, etc.) specifically tied to each character.
• Exploration & Backtracking: Players must frequently use "Tag Barrels" to swap Kongs to solve character-specific puzzles and access new areas within eight massive worlds. 

Plot

The villainous King K. Rool plans to destroy Donkey Kong Island with a doomsday device called the Blast-o-Matic. After he kidnaps Donkey's friends and steals his Golden Banana hoard, Donkey Kong must rescue his family and collect enough bananas to power his way through K. Rool's defenses. 

Technical Features

• Expansion Pak Requirement: It was the first N64 game that required the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak (a memory upgrade) to function.
• DK Rap: The game's intro features the "DK Rap," a comedy hip-hop song that has since become a famous piece of gaming pop culture.
• Multiplayer: Includes a "Kong Battle" mode where up to four players can compete in arena-style deathmatches.
• Classic Games: Playable versions of the original Donkey Kong arcade game and Jetpac are hidden within the levels.
