Crazy Taxi: Catch a Ride is a 3D racing action game released for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in April 2003. Developed by Graphic State Games and published by THQ and Sega, the game is an ambitious attempt to port the fast-paced, open-world gameplay of the original arcade and Dreamcast hit to Nintendo's 2D-focused handheld hardware.
Core Gameplay
- Objective: Pick up fares and race against the clock to drop them off, earning tips through stunt driving.
- Characters: Play as the four original cabbies: Axel, B.D. Joe, Gena, and Gus.
- Locations: Navigate through two massive cities inspired by San Francisco and Los Angeles.
- Crazy Box: Master taxi mechanics across nine challenging minigames.
- Tricks: Chain together Crazy Jumps, Drifts, and Combos to maximize your high scores.
Technical Execution
The game is widely recognized for its technical ambition, utilizing the custom 3D "Rush" graphics engine to push the GBA hardware to its absolute limits. To make the open-world map function on a handheld, the city streets are rendered in true 3D, while the cars, passengers, and traffic obstacles are drawn using 2D sprites.
