It serves as a direct sequel to the original Bomberman 64, introducing a more linear, screen-to-screen gameplay style that blends the 3D exploration of its predecessor with the grid-based mechanics of classic 2D Bomberman titles. 

Story and Setting

The story begins with Bomberman drifting into a black hole created by the power-hungry Rukifellth and his BHB Army. 

• The Mission: Enslaved planets are held by "Gravity Generators," and Bomberman must destroy these to free the universe.
• The Seven Stones: Rukifellth seeks seven legendary Elemental Stones; Bomberman must recover them before the BHB Army can use their power to conquer the galaxy.
• New Companion: Early in the adventure, Bomberman meets Pommy, a small creature that hatches from a mysterious egg. 

Key Gameplay Features

• Elemental Bombs: Collecting Elemental Stones grants access to unique bomb types, such as Ice Bombs to freeze water, Hurricane Bombs to blow across gaps, and Lightning Bombs to power machinery.
• Traditional Explosions: Unlike the spherical blasts of the first N64 game, The Second Attack returns to the classic cross-shaped ("+") explosions.
